John Cockers

We don’t know much about this song. It was on John Mellencamp’s “Life, Death, Love and Freedom,” which would make number 5 on the Rolling Stone’s list of 50 Best Albums of the Year in 2008.

We know the original was produced by T Bone Burnett, who gives the song some depth and texture … and heavy smoker Mellencamp was experiencing a late-in-life voice change, getting rougher every minute.

I’ll put the lyrics and chords below. The song is about a man who just wants to be left alone and has no friends. It’s the ultimate blues song, and the way Mellencamp presents it, you’d immediately think it was about himself. Continue reading “John Cockers”

Neaky Freat

My Many Personalities!

We’re on a mighty trip!
We never get it right!
But God grades on a curve
You get what you deserve! A song!

By popular demand (not my cat!) I’ll do a Turkey Day share.
This is still in process, and represents my latest project.

It’s called “Neaky Freat.”
It’s about dancing.
I play all the instruments, designed the drums and wrote the tune.
Working on this in iMovie as I migrate to a better interface (DaVinci).
Also getting to know Apple Motion a little better, which is fun!
At this point, I haven’t added the bass guy, some FX and finishing. Continue reading “Neaky Freat”

Our Town

A Musical Journey

From Iris DeMent’s “Infamous Angel” (1992)

The background is worth the price of admission!

“Iris Luella DeMent (born Jan. 5, 1961), an American two-time Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter, was born in Paragould, Arkansas, the 14th and youngest child of Pat DeMent (1910–1992) and wife Flora Mae (1918–2011). Iris’s mother harbored dreams of going to Nashville and starting a singing career. Although she put those plans on hold to get married, her singing voice was an inspiration and influence for her youngest daughter Iris.

DeMent was inspired to write her first song ‘Our Town’ by a drive through a boarded-up Midwest town, at the age of 25. The lyrics came to her “exactly as it is now”, without need for re-writing, and she realized then songwriting was her calling in life. ‘Our Town’ was played during the closing scene for the final episode (July 26, 1995) of CBS’s television series Northern Exposure.”

She was fourteenth and youngest! Way to go Flora Mae! Continue reading “Our Town”

Just Let Time Go Slow

free poem

Just Let Time Go Slow

You look into my soul
Right in to my eyes
Like a gun you hold
Nothing left to be told

Sometimes I don’t eat
Worry like a lost sheep
Feel so vulnerable
Then you do what you do

I’m in poverty
And you’re peeling away
And I wish you would do it
Do it all day

I’m surrendering now
You know I know how
The connection is easy
Just let time go slow

And the invisible beat
It’s at all of our feet
You look into my heart
While I’m watching the show

It’s a dance party
That goes on for years Continue reading “Just Let Time Go Slow”

Loaf of Bread

free poem

Loaf of Bread
(a poem)

Sliced bread ain’t that great
Certainly not the best thing I ever ate
Please allow me to elucidate
I know somethin’ better!

When she walks in the room I turn to butter
Better than just about anything ever
No loaf of bread could come near looking better
Especially when she’s in her white sweater

So she’s out in the sun and she’s perfectly toasted
And if I had some jelly and some coffee I roasted
We could clean up the cupboards and toss out the rotted
And we could run on the beach ’till we’re totally wasted Continue reading “Loaf of Bread”

Love Yourself (Sheeran) – Mark Urso

So, I saw a great band, and they did this song, so I went home and figured it out. The only problem is, I’m not as great as they are!

Love Yourself

But I’m trying! Playing with a Boss VE-8 Acoustic Singer pedal, with no amp. The electric guitar is plugged into the pedal, which goes into my recording DAW. The pedal arrangement on the VE-8 is quite excellent. In all my time playing with audio equipment, I’ve never Continue reading “Love Yourself (Sheeran) – Mark Urso”

We Got Your Back (A Poem For 2021)

A Poem Banner

We Got Your Back

The capitol’s surrounded by eight foot fences
But nobody’s sure what they’re defendin’
My mama taught me to double check my sources
I got all day and I’m gonna dance on the tension

This world’s spinning in a field of black holes
Up high in the mountains it’s as perfect as gold
The view on my horse and that settin’ sun
My freedom’s the glimmer off the side of my gun

We love you nature, yea, we got your back
All them fossil fuels coming out our smokestacks
Some people say we’re gonna stop spinnin’ soon!
I got all day and I’m just gonna try and be cool Continue reading “We Got Your Back (A Poem For 2021)”

I’m White! (a poem)

just words

A Lovely Poem
about being who I am

This won’t take too long!

White, heterosexual, Catholic and skinny!

It’s an ongoing project!

I’m white.
Stop telling me that’s bad.

I’m heterosexual.
Stop telling me I have a choice!

I’m Catholic.
Stop telling me lies about my own faith!

I’m skinny.
I eat anything I want.

So there.
